2012 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Federal legislation commonly called “Title IX.” Originally directed towards equality in all educational activities at schools with Federal funding, its primary visible impact has been on Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics.
Agnus Berenato, Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball Team at the University of Pittsburgh, has both played and coached under a developing Title IX environment. She will share her insights into Title IX and its impact on Women’s sports at multiple levels, including, of course, at Pitt. Coach Berenato’s extraordinary enthusiasm, team spirit, and leadership ensure a most interesting and inspiring lecture.
Since Coach Berenato arrived at Pitt in 2003, she has taken the Pitt Women’s Basketball Team from lesser standings to being a Conference contender through building team achievements in both regular season and post-season contests. She coached the most season wins in school history in 2008-09, and she brought Pitt Women’s Basketball’s first NCAA Tournament bid, back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances, and five straight postseason tournaments from 2005-2011. She got her coaching start at Rider University in 1981, before moving to George Tech in the ACC from 1988-2003. Overall, she has compiled 435 victories in 28 seasons as a Head Coach. She was an undergraduate at Mount St. Mary’s, which has also awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. She has also been awarded the Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year twice.
